The Fortune-Teller’s Lament

“You pay what you think your question's worth,” I said. “Most people barter, and I don't mind cash either.”

The querent blinked. She distractedly patted the infant strapped to her chest. “And you might be able to tell me which of those bastards stole my best horse?”

“No promises. But usually I see something.”

She nodded. Then she carefully unhooked the wraps securing her child and lifted the baby up on to the table between us. It waved a tiny, perfect fist at me.

My heart spasmed sharply, painfully, before I saw her reach into her vest for a purse.
