A Moment Found

By: Whitney Collins-Wilson

Stirring too much sugar into her coffee, Adeline heard something in the living room.

Excited, yet cautious, she tip-toed in.

Gingerly sitting on the couch, she held her breath. Waiting.

Her son Ronnie was playing with his sock monkey near the bookshelf. He hadn’t played with it in years, and she’d missed their antics.

Looking up, his blue eyes met hers and she softly whispered “How’s it going honey?” He grinned, giving her a luminous thumbs-up.

She allowed herself a shadow of a smile.

Appallingly, the doorbell cleaved the moment.

She turned back but the room was empty once again.
